What is a “Hard Bypass?” Short answer: It’s an added ball valve that allows water to flow past the canister filter, if need be. It’s an extra measure we take to give our customers added peace of mind and, in an unlikely, unfortunate situation, it could be a difference maker. Sometimes, canister filters leak. Most often, it’s the rubber O-ring gasket. If the wrong grease is used, the filter is overtightened, sediment gets trapped in there, and/or time, wear & tear take their toll, the O-ring can be compromised. If this happens, there will likely be a leak. To activate the hard bypass, simply turn all three ball valves 90° (located on each side and above the canister filter, as pictured) so that water can still flow to the house, but not through the filter.
We have seen rare instances where the canister filter is damaged and, if left undetected, could result in a significant leak or flooding. The hard bypass is a good idea. It’s a little bit of extra plumbing, installation time, and costly fittings, but it’s worth it. The hard bypass now comes standard at Mountain Water Systems when we install canister filters. If you’re concerned with sediment in your water, contact us today and we’ll go the extra mile to ensure your system is of the highest quality and standard.
