Flow Restriction

WEAVERVILLE, NC --

The rate at which water flows (flow rate) is measured in gallons per minute (GPM) and this measurement is vital to filtering water effectively. It's important to understand flow rate requirements when it comes to water filtration. If the flow rate is too high, it could potentially over flow the filtration. If it's too low, backwashing filters cannot clean themselves properly.

When it comes to plumbing, there are many conditions that can cause flow restrictions (decreased flow rate). In this case, we discovered a change in the plumbing that was limiting the amount of water that could flow through the drain line of the backwashing filtration. The drain line needed to be run to a different location, so a plumber added a coupling to the drain line and tied it into half inch PEX tubing. The inside diameter (ID) of the coupling and PEX used is significantly less than the proper coupling and poly tube that was needed to properly run the drain line. We made the repair and verified that the filtration was backwashing and draining correctly. Problem solved!

It's easy to overlook flow rate requirements when performing what seems to be a simple plumbing fix. This is why we recommend contacting us if there are any plumbing needs that relate to water filtration in any way - including the filtration's drain lines. Flow rates really do matter, and can be the difference between treated and contaminated water. We're here to help, because we care about our customers and the quality of their water. Please contact us if you have any concerns with your water quality and feel free to bring us a water sample - we'll test it in our Asheville office, for free!
