Ozone

Ozone gas (O3) is a molecule made of three oxygen atoms. It exists both in the Earth's upper atmosphere, where it forms a protective layer, and at ground level, where excess levels can be a pollutant. Located in the stratosphere, the upper atmosphere, it acts as a shield, absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun... but how is it used in water treatment?

Generally, Ozone gas is used in water treatment as a last resort. Some wells here in western North Carolina have a very potent, stubborn, sulfur odor (rotten egg smell). In most cases, a Sulfur Filter will do the trick but, in some cases, an extra measure is needed to remove the sulfur odor from water in the plumbing. By installing an Ozone Generator on the water filtration valve, we are able to create an Ozone gas barrier (pocket of Ozone gas) inside of the filtration tank that the sulfur odor cannot get past. We have found that, in most cases of extremely persistent sulfur odor, Ozone treatment is effective and our customers with this treatment are finally rid of that rotten egg smell in their plumbing.

If you or someone you know has water that smells like sulfur on the cold side, please contact us and we can come up with a solution that effectively removes the sulfur odor. It's important to note that sulfur causing bacteria on the hot side is a different issue and is most likely a colonization of the water heater (requiring a new anode rod and sanitization).
