UV Light FAQ

For questions on what an ultraviolet (UV) light is and what it does, please see our UV Lights page. Once you become generally familiar with a UV light system, it might be helpful to get some answers to frequently asked questions. Please note: the following FAQ's are questions asked about systems we install and maintain, not necessarily all UV Lights out there.

Why is my UV light beeping and how do I get it to stop?

The UV light controller has a countdown, usually 365 days, and will sound a loud beeping alarm when the day count reaches zero. This means it's time to change the bulb. This doesn't mean that your bulb is no longer working, but the ultraviolet light may not be as intense, which can reduce its effectiveness, so the manufacturer specifies to change the bulb at the one year mark. Power failure or system failure can also cause the alarm to sound. There are different ways to silence the alarm but, generally, resetting the controller will restart the countdown and silence the alarm. However, it's important to contact us to get on the schedule for service, if you elect to not change the bulb or troubleshoot the alarm. In any event, the controller needs to be reset the same day that the bulb is actually changed. Note: Customers who schedule UV light maintenance with us have records of when the bulb has been changed so we can help in the event of a failure.

Why does the "sleeve" need to be cleaned or replaced periodically?

The UV light bulb is encased in a clear quartz sleeve that is in direct contact with pressurized water. Depending on the water chemistry, the sleeve can develop a film, discoloration, buildup, and/or etching, over time. This can, essentially, render the ultraviolet light less effective. We recommend inspecting the sleeve every time the bulb is changed. Usually, the film cleans off but if the staining or etching doesn't, then we recommend replacing the sleeve.
