Weakened Plumbing

FAIRVIEW, NC --

We were recently installing a Neutralizer and a Water Softener at a new customer's house that had pre-existing filtration in place to address sediment (a spin-down filter and a canister filter). The brass fittings (elbows, etc.) were noticeably degraded, nearly to the point of failure, in the pre-existing plumbing.

Prior to the install, we tested the water and discovered that the water was acidic (had pH under 7.0). Acidic water corrodes metal, including plumbing, fixtures, and appliances. There are different grades of plumbing, some higher and some lower. Lower grade plumbing has the tendency to corrode quicker than higher grade plumbing, but all grades of brass, copper, galvanized steel, etc. are susceptible to corrosion from acidic water. In this customer's case, the fittings used in the plumbing were low grade brass. We replaced the low grade fittings with high grade specialized polymer fittings that are corrosion resistant.

Had we not replaced the pre-existing, low grade, brass fittings that were very weak, it's highly likely pinholes would form, causing leaks, potential flooding, and well water supply issues. It's very important to understand your water chemistry and behavior, in order to prevent potential problems down the road. Mountain Water Systems provides free water testing and free consultations, Monday-Thursday from 9am-3pm and on Friday from 9am-1pm. Please see our collection instructions and bring us a water sample!
